Ed Hawkins in Southern Hills
Aside from the Arapahoe Acres development, Ed Hawkins designed numerous houses
all over the Denver area. These two Usonian-style Southern Hills homes date from 1958.
There is also a house in Arapahoe Hills based on the same design as this house above.

Gable canopy
…for lack of a better term for the roof over the entranceway to this home in Southern Hills.
I would guess that this somewhat Asian-themed canopy dates this house to 1959-60?

Witkin house
Another Fall photo from Southern Hills, this one the Usonian-style Witkin House,
designed 1959 by Horace Brand and Harvey Jensen. The beams are quite unique.
(Architect names gleaned from the guidebook The Mid-Century Modern House in
Denver by Michael Paglia and Diane Wray Tomasso.)

Inspiration Point International-style
This is another modernist home on Inspiration Terrace built by Denver businessman
Alphonse Martischang on the east side of Inspiration Point.
What is especially interesting about this house is that it seems to have embraced the
International Style during two different, but very early eras. The original brick house with
eaves from 1932 borders on Streamline Moderne, while the 1942 update adds the upper
deck with the glorious 360-degree view which is probably one of the best in the city!

Inspiration Terrace
Beautiful 1964 modernist home nicely sited on a slope facing Sheridan on the east side of
Inspiration Point park (once owned by Denver businessman Alphonse Martischang).
(Tip of the hat to MidCenturyStyle.)

Lace House
The Carpenter Gothic-style, gingerbread Lace House in Blackhawk, built in 1863. Photo taken years ago when the house was still at it’s original location at “Tragedy Point” which was in the process of being carved away for parking. (click to enlarge)

Prairie-style details
Examples of the Prairie-style of architecture are not that common in Denver, but this
house on Vine St. is one of my favorites. While the massing might not strike you as
different than the Denver Square, the details are clearly Prairie style.
Built in 1909 and designed by T. Robert Wieger, it features beautiful leaded-glass
windows, outstanding wood trim and brick details.

Burnt Orange
Richard Crowther designed this Usonian-style home, the Neufeld House, in 1956.
Here the sun shows the true color of the burnt orange ribbed terra cotta tiles. These are original to the house and match the orange used for his design for the Cooper Cinerama Theatre on Colorado.

Sculptured House of Genesee
A beautiful rendering of the Sculptured House of Genesee, or the “Flying Saucer House”
as it is referred to by passerby on I-70.
Designed 1963 by Charles Deaton, it was the focal point of Woody Allen’s futurist comedy Sleeper from 1973. It was never quite finished until Denver’s John Huggins completed it and added the Deaton-designed addition in 2003.

In the shade
Ample shade is provided by the eaves of this mid-1950s Eichler-inspired home in Krisana
Park, designed by H.B. Wolff & Company.
(You can see that this is a different house model than the previous two Krisana Park homes.
There were seven models to choose from).

Wallbank House
The Wallbank House in Belcaro, a 1958 Usonian-design by Tician
Papachristou and Daniel Havekost.
As you may have seen in the news, it is about to be torn down to
make room for new construction.
Daniel Havekost is an important Denver architect.
Papachristou is known the world over (and wrote the book on Bauhaus architect
Marcel Breuer).
