My wife grew up a few blocks from Gordo’s and she tells me the original cafe was actually on the other side of the street on Colfax – in a much smaller structure than later – even though 6999 was quite small

The later Gordo’s which moved to 6th and Sheridan is now torn down. They built it in a lot that stood vacant for all of the 1950’s and 1960’s and into the 1970’s.

There were a group of Mexican merchants who used to sell watermelons (Sandias) there every summer in the 1ate 1950’s – early 1960’s – Then eventually the Gordo’s Cafe (more like a full-blown restaurant) came onto the property.
